Awards and recognitions 2014

Awards given by the Department of Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science has given some annual awards to its staff members since 2001. During the Department's Christmas Coffee for staff these awards for 2014 were given to the following persons::

  • Junior Good Teacher: Research assistant Joni Salmi
  • Senior Good Teacher: Assistant Professor Teemu Roos
  • Junior Good Researcher: Doctoral student Dominik Kempa
  • Senior Good Researcher: Academy Fellow Arto Klami
  • Person of the year: University Instructor Tiina Niklander
Awards and recognitions given to the Department and its staff or students
  • Best paper awards:
    • The writers of three articles received the award for best conference paper in 2014;  N. Asokan and Markus Miettinen (ASIA CCS 2014), Fabian Fagerholm (EASE 2014) , as well as Arto Vihavainen (ACM SIGITE 2014).
    • Hansi Keijonen, Jaakko Kurhila, and Arto Vihavainen received the Benjamin J. Dasher award for the best article and presentation at the previous year’s IEEE Frontiers in Education conference.
    • Aaron Yi Ding, Markku Kojo, and Sasu Tarkoma, in turn, received the ACM SIGCOM CCR award for the best article in the Computer Communication Review journal.
  • Teaching-related awards and recognitions:
    • University Lecturer, Head of Studies Jaakko Kurhila and Lecturer Heikki Lokki started as members of the Teachers' Academy at the University of Helsinki in 2014.
    • The programming course MOOC at the Department was elected as one of the success stories at the Open Finland 2014 expo.
    • Team Game of Nolife (Otte Heinävaara, Olli Hirviniemi, and Topi Talvitie) from the University of Helsinki reached 4th place in the NWERC programming competition in Linköping in November 2014.
    • Team Misaki (Toni Annala, Antti Laaksonen, Pekka Mikkola, and Mikko Sysikaski), consisting of current and former students at the department, won a SibHack competion organised in the honour of Sibelius 150 jubileum.
  • Other awards and recognitions
    • ​Professor Eero Hyvönen (Aalto University) received the State Award for Public Information for research partially done at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki.
