Autumn School on Computational Creativity

Venue, hotels, and travel (2011)

The autumn school will take place on 7-11 November, 2011, in Porvoo, Finland. Porvoo is an hour from from Helsinki airport or from downtown Helsinki. It is the second oldest town of Finland, and is known for its wooden old town dating back to the 18th century. (In November it is likely to be as gray as anywhere else in Finland, however.) The lectures will be held in Grand, a house for culture.

On Wednesday, the school will have its lectures in Helsinki. This gives our foreign participants a better chance to see Helsinki during their visit to Finland: you can stay in Helsinki for the evening and take a regular bus back to Porvoo. Otherwise, transportation will be provided for those staying in Porvoo.

Porvoo (Mon-Tue, Thu-Fri):

Kulttuuritalo Grand. Address: Piispankatu 28, FI-06100 Porvoo, Finland. Grand is located in the center of Porvoo, next to the bus station. For more information about Porvoo, see .

Helsinki (Wed):

University Museum Arppeanum. Address: Snellmanninkatu 3, FI-00100 Helsinki, Finland. Arppeanum is located close the university main building and next to the Senate Square, in downtown Helsinki. For more information about Arppeanum, see .

For participants outside Helsinki area

Arrival from Helsinki airport. There is a bus connection to Porvoo from Helsinki airport every 1-2 hours, and the bus trip takes about an hour. See the Matkahuolto web site for time tables: . Enter Helsinki-Vantaa as place of departure and Porvoo as destination. Click "Search", and the specify your terminal in the place of departure. (There should be no need to buy the ticket in advance or make a reservation even if the system offers that option.) The ticket is about EUR 13 one way. A student discount may apply.

A taxi trip from the airport takes about 40 minutes and costs about EUR 80-90.

Arrival from Helsinki train station. Walk 0,4 km to Kamppi bus terminal to catch a bus to Porvoo. For information on buses, see Arrival for participants from Helsinki area below.

Dates of arrival and departure. We suggest you arrive on Sunday because we plan to start the program on Monday morning. We plan to finish early on Friday afternoon, so you can take an evening flight or train home.

Hotels. You can stay in Porvoo the whole week. Transportation from Porvoo to Helsinki will be provided on Wednesday. If you want to spend more time in Helsinki, you can consider spending the Wed-Thu night (or even the Tue-Wed) night in Helsinki (but then you will not get the special rate of Hotel Sparre in Porvoo, see below). For hotels in Porvoo, see information below.

For participants from Helsinki area

Arrival. A bus trip from Kamppi bus terminal takes about an hour, from Kumpula Campus about 40 minutes, and from Itäkeskus about 45 minutes. For the fastest connections, use the motorway buses ("moottoritie", via Ooppera, Sturenkatu, Kumpula and Viikki) or express buses ("pikavuoro", via ooppera, Sturenkatu, Itäväylä). Tickets from Kamppi should cost EUR 11 (motorway and regular buses) or EUR 14 (express buses). Student discounts may apply. See Matkahuolto site at for schedules (but note that times for bus stops on the way are rough estimates, and during rush hours buses can be 10-15 minutes late). Due to construction work, some buses temporarily stop on a neighboring street to the bus station, not at the bus station.

Hotels. We suggest staying in Porvoo for two nights, Mon-Tue and Thu-Fri since we plan to have social programme these nights. We currently plan to spend the whole Wednesday in Helsinki so there is no need to travel to Porvoo then.

The participants should reserve their accommodation themselves (with the exception of Hecse members, for whom the reservations will be managed centrally. Stay tuned for more instructions.)

The following hotels are located close to the center of Porvoo:

If you arrive by car, book a parking place at your hotel in advance.
