Welcome to the international (English-speaking) blog of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki. Our blog invites views on research, education, student life, and other societal themes connected to our computer science fields. The intention is to build a forum as an open window for readers from inside and outside computer science. If you have any good ideas or articles to share on this blog, please feel free to contact us: cs-blog [ät] cs.helsinki.fi.
Welcome to Kumpula Club Buddy Program
by Aino Sipari
Our Kumpula club buddy program is recruiting new buddies!
Kumpula buddy program was established to bring together internationally minded people at the Kumpula Science Campus, and to make new international staff members feel welcome from the very beginning of their stay. The Buddy Program is facilitated by the Faculty of Science and International HR services of the university, the heart of the program being the Buddies – Kumpula Campus staff members who have joined to the program as volunteers.
The idea for the Buddy Program derived from the Target Program of the Faculty of Science, added to the feedback given by the occupational health services, that reported some persons arriving in Kumpula from abroad – especially younger persons engaged with their PhD research project – were not able to network and socially integrate at the campus and in Finland. Many of these talented people would like to socialize with their new colleagues after work, when most Finns tend to go home after working day. In Finland, there is no such after work culture as in some European countries, which makes it sometimes more difficult find company in evening time. The Buddy Program was organized to tackle this challenge, as well as to give Kumpula Campus staff a chance to network internationally. As the saying goes, "What you give is what you get!"
The Kumpula Buddy Program invited staff members all around the Kumpula Campus to join the project, and luckily a group of volunteers were enthusiastic to join. Buddies are not asked for long term commitment, but to meet a new comer couple of times over a cup of coffee or for a lunch. For buddies the program is a good possibility to expand one’s social network and train the language skills. Many of the buddies have themselves been working abroad at some point of their lives and now wish to help others with settling in. Faculty of Science supports the buddies by giving vouchers for Unicafe and Unisport, as well as movie tickets. Also meetings and trips for all buddies and newcomers are planned to take place during the academic year.
