Welcome to the international (English-speaking) blog of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki. Our blog invites views on research, education, student life, and other societal themes connected to our computer science fields. The intention is to build a forum as an open window for readers from inside and outside computer science. Busy Year for the Networking and Services and NODES Community
Sasu Tarkoma
This has been a busy year for the networking and services specialization line and the NODES research community at the Department. We have made the headlines from rooftop greenhouses to energy-optimising mobile apps and squeeze-based smartphones. We should not forget the best paper awards and other mentions either. We did well in the university research assessment exercise as well. We have also strengthened the industry connections and the recent Internet of Things (IoT) research program is one example of this.
One of the recent highlights is our new security professor Asokan who started in September. You can expect many exciting new security related activities in the future. According to the industry there is a vital need for new security experts --- we have in part anticipated this need.
The current profiles in our line include Internet technology, enterprise computing, and interactive systems with the emerging profile of security.
In addition to focusing more on security, we have also thoroughly updated the undergraduate Operating Systems and Data Communications courses, and are now working on new assignments to support the courses. Also there are exciting new courses pertaining to HCI and interactive systems. We will also have a new research methodology course for our M.Sc. and Ph.D. students during the Spring.
Supporting the teaching and research activities, we have the NODES lab that was started in 2010 and is now in full operating condition. We have our own OpenStack-based cloud running in the lab and the Ukko cluster. You can expect new intensive courses and assignments in the lab soon.
The year 2013 looks very promising with new research and teaching related activities.
Seasons greetings and Merry Christmas for all and Happy New Year!
Head of the Networking and Services line
