Osana ÄlykäsVesi-hanketta HSY järjestää viemäriverkon resurssitehokkuuden ja ympäristön tilan parantamiseen tähtäävän Hackathonin Viikinmäen jätevedenpuhdistamolla. Is the environment close to your heart? Would you like to save the world by programming?
Efficient water usage is becoming more and more important as quality water sources are dwindling. The need for water efficiency solutions in Finland is based on the need of general energy efficiency: leaks from the network of pipes, stromwater flowing into the sewers increase the amount of water that needs to be pumped and purified, thus increasing energy usage in the process. Up to 20% of the total clean water pumped into HSY’s (Environmental Services for the Helsinki area) network is lost due to leaks. The urban runoff water that ends up in the sewers increases the amount of wasted water by 50% - and the problems keep adding up thanks to extra rainfall caused by climate change.
HSY has started a SmartWater project funded by Tekes (Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation) for which the goal is to improve energy and resource effectiveness for the waterworks. The project aims at developing and implementing new and innovative systems for sewers and water distribution. The goal is to build tools for handling the raw data provided by modern water supply systems.
As part of the SmartWater initiative HSY is organizing a hackathon aimed at improving the environment and the resource effectiveness of sewage systems, held at the wastewater treatment plant in Viikinmäki.
Provided as source material for the hackathon are the energy and operation data of over 500 pumping stations, map data and a large amount of rainfall- and rain mapping data from the Finnish Meteorological Institute. The hackathon follows the principles of open source software development and as such, the applications developed during the event should be open source.
Know-how about water supply is provided by water engineering students of Aalto University. During the weekend a team of experts will also be available for support.
The hackathon will be organized on 22.4. - 24.4.2016 on-site at the HSY Viikinmäki wastewater treatment plant. In addition to saving the world there will be food, sauna, possibly a chance to dive into a (clean) pool and rewards for the best solutions!

Kiinnostavatko ympäristöasiat? Haluatko pelastaa maailman koodaamalla?
Resurssitehokkaiden vedenkäytön ratkaisujen tarve on maailmanlaajuisesti kasvussa hyvälaatuisten raakavesivarantojen huvetessa. Suomessa vedenkäytön tehostamistarpeet kumpuavat ennen kaikkea energiankäytön tehostamisen tarpeesta; verkostosta hukkaan vuotava vesi ja toisaalta viemäriin valuvat sade- ja sulamisvedet lisäävät pumpattavan ja puhdistettavan veden määrää, jolloin energiaakin kuluu enemmän. HSY:n verkostoon pumppaamasta puhtaasta vedestä jopa 20 prosenttia häviää vuotoina verkoston ulkopuolelle. Viemäriverkkoon päätyvä hulevesi puolestaan lisää jätevesimäärää vuositasolla noin 50 prosenttia - ja ongelma pahenee ilmastonmuutoksen lisätessä rankkasateita. Kovilla rankkasateilla osa jätevedestä voi päätyä käsittelemättömänä vesistöön.
HSY on käynnistänyt Tekes-rahoitteisen ÄlykäsVesi-hankekokonaisuuden, jonka tavoitteena on parantaa vesihuollon energia- ja resurssitehokkuutta. Hankkeessa kehitetään ja otetaan käyttöön vedenjakelun ja viemäröinnin uusia ja innovatiivisia älykkäitä järjestelmiä. Tavoitteena on rakentaa työkalut modernin vesihuollon tuottaman kasvavan tietomäärän hallintaan.
Osana ÄlykäsVesi-hanketta HSY järjestää viemäriverkon resurssitehokkuuden ja ympäristön tilan parantamiseen tähtäävän Hackathonin Viikinmäen jätevedenpuhdistamolla.
Materiaalina käytössä on yli 500 pumppaamon energia- ja käyttötiedot, kartta-aineistoa sekä hyvin laaja aineisto Ilmatieteen laitoksen avointa sadetutkadataa. Tapahtumassa kehitettävät sovellukset ovat lähtökohtaisesti avointa lähdekoodia.
Vesihuolto-osaamista tilaisuuteen tuovat Aallon vesihuoltotekniikan opiskelijat. Viikonlopun aikana hämmentynyttä käpistelijää tukevat vesiteekkareiden lisäksi lauantai- ja sunnuntaiaamun asiantuntijaklinikat.
Hackathon järjestetään HSY:n tiloissa Viikinmäen jätevedenpuhdistamolla 22.-24.4.2016. Maailman pelastamisen ja koodailun lisäksi luvassa ruokaa, saunomista ja mahdollisesti myös (puhtaan veden) uima-altaaseen pulahtelua. Parhaat aikaansaannokset palkitaan ruhtinaallisesti!
