This course will cover a set of advanced security and privacy issues related to the usage of modern systems and technologies. In particular, the course will focus on the following three aspects. 1) Smartphone Security and Privacy: Security issues and attacks mitigations; Mitigating potential threats of SSL-vulnerable applications; Threats to user privacy through traffic analysis. 2) Social Network Security: Better privacy at (almost) no cost in Social Network; Virtual Private Social Networks; Friend in the Middle; Fake profiles attacks and detection strategies. 3) Future Internet Technology: Proposals for the next Internet architecture; Content Centric Networking and Named Data Networking; Cache privacy attacks and countermeasures; Denial of Service attacks and countermeasures; Covert Channels. The scope of this course is to expose the students to security and privacy issues related to the usage of modern systems and technologies, as well as stimulate their capacity of critical thinking for research ideas and methodologies.

SHORT BIO:
Mauro Conti received his PhD from Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, in 2009. He was Postdoctoral Researcher at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, The Netherlands. From 2011, he is as Assistant Professor at the University of Padua.
He as been visiting Researcher at GMU, UCLA, UCI, and TU Darmstadt. From 2012, he is a EU Marie Curie Fellow, and in 2013, he received a fellowship by the German DAAD. In 2014, he was elevated to the IEEE Senior Member grade.
His research interests are mainly in the area of security and privacy. In this area, he published 70+ papers in topmost international peer-reviewed journals and conferences. He was General Chair for SecureComm 2012 and for ACM SACMAT 2013.

At the University of Padua, the SPRITZ Security and Privacy Research Group carry on research in the area of security and privacy, particularly focusing on critical infrastructures, future internet architecture, cloud, mobile systems, and social networks.
University of Padua and the SPRITZ group are strongly Internationally oriented and always open to collaborate with strongly motivated researchers and students. A possible opportunity is the ERASMUS agreement with the University of Helsinki: thanks to this agreement, students from Helsinki can study in Padua for their MSc project in collaboration with lecturers at Helsinki.

Completing the course

The mini course includes three lecture over two days and completing the course may result in the obtention of 1 ECTS if all lectures have been attended and a short report is submitted within a week after the completion of the course, latest by Tuesday, September 30, 2014. The report should be 1 to 2 pages long summarizing a topic covered during the lecture and your own reflections about the topic (ideas for future research on the topic). The reflections should be supported by additional readings on related work.
