General

HOME EXAM IS NOW LIVE, DEADLINE FOR RETURNING EXAM AND PROJECT WORK 15.1

Exam  Task 3 updated on 7.1.2017 (deadline 15.1. 23:59pm)

Exercises are given by Ella Peltonen and Farbod Faghihi. Please contact by email firstname.lastname at cs.helsinki.fi. The course also have an informal IRC channel #locationawareness.

Location-awareness refers to the capability of an entity (e.g., person, device or application) to be able to determine its location. With the profiliteration of location-enabled smartphones, location-awareness has become an important domain within research and  businesses. The course covers basic concepts and methods for position estimation, both in indoor and outdoor settings, algorithms for processing location data (e.g., detecting frequently visited locations and processing data from movements of humans), and the use of location in applications and services (i.e., different forms of location-based services).

Rough outline of the course:

  • Location and Location-Awareness
  • Location-Based Games and other Location-Based Services
  • Positioning Algorithms
  • Location Systems (Indoor and Outdoors)
  • Spatial Data Analysis

Completing the course

The course involves a home exam, a project work, and weekly exercise sessions. Successful completion requires achieving at least half of the points in both the exam and the exercises, and completion of the project work.

Literature and material

The course does not follow any specific textbook. Some general overviews to the topics nevertheless cover most of the topics that will be discussed during the course:

  • Varshavsky, A. & Patel, S. Krumm, J. (Ed.) Location in Ubiquitous Computing Ubiquitous Computing Fundamentals, Chapman and Hall/CRC, 2010, 285-320
  • Küpper, A. Location-Based Services : Fundamentals and Operation Wiley, 2005

NOTE: The latest edition of the course is a merger of two separate courses: Location-Awareness (4cu, 582684) and Project in Location-Awareness (2cu). The course materials of the earlier course thus give a good idea of the extent and nature of the contents.
