Guest Lecture:  "A survey of transliteration methods."
Friday 21 December 2012, 13:00, room C220

Edward Klyshinsky,

and Keldysh Institute for Applied Mathematics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Moscow, Russia

Natural text translation process faces the problem of proper names.  The proper name in the destination text should be both phonetically and graphically recognizable.  Dictionaries are never sufficient to tackle this problem.  The talk will discuss various methods of automatic transliteration for proper names.  Two broad approaches will be considered: statistical transliteration and statistical machine learning vs. rules-driven transliteration and automatic generation of rules. We will present two methods for rule-driven transliteration that were developed by our group.  Methods of named entity recognition and identification will be also mentioned.

Brief bio: Dr Klyshinsky's areas of interest: natural language processing and tools, documentation systems, finite state automata, machine transliteration. One of the key developers of transliteration system "Transscriba" http://transscriba.keldysh.ru/ (in Russian)
