UH among the top 100 on the Times list – Life Sciences ranks 47th

The University of Helsinki gained the 100th place in the Times Higher Education university ranking for years 2013-2014.

This was an improvement of 9 places since last year. The University of Helsinki is the best Finnish university again, and now the second-best ranking Nordic university.

The Times Higher Education ranking list published last night is topped by universities in the English-speaking world: The California Institute of Technology, Harvard and Oxford. The topmost university from a non-English-speaking country was ETH Zürich at number 14.

Out of Nordic universities, only the University of Helsinki and Karolinska Institutet (number 36) ranked among the top 100 universities in the world.

Among Finnish universities, Aalto University, the University of Eastern Finland, and the University of Tampere were ranked in the 301-350 category. The University of Jyväskylä was in the 351-400 category.

Markus Laitinen, head of international affairs at the University of Helsinki, is pleased with the result.

- Being ranked among the 100 best universities gives us a practical advantage. It promotes our image internationally.

The University of Helsinki gained its highest score by far from the number of citations, and the second highest for internationalisation.

The ranking of the University of Helsinki by scientific discipline:

    Life Sciences at 47
    Arts & Humanities at 62
    Physical Sciences at 63
    Clinical, Pre-Clinical & Health Sciences at 95

The science categories of the evaluation do not coincide exactly with those at the University of Helsinki.
