CS Department seeks university lecturer

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki, Faculty of Science is renowned for the quality of its research and teaching. Varied in both form and contents, the teaching is constantly improved and open to new innovations. As a token of the quality of teaching at the department, the Ministry of Education has elected it twice as one of the national centres of excellence in university education. The Department of Computer Science is situated at the Kumpula campus, the leading concentration of know-how in exact sciences in Finland.

The Department of Computer Science invites applications for the position of

UNIVERSITY LECTURER

for a permanent appointment as of 1 March 2015.

The discipline of the vacancy is computer science. In addition to teaching and research duties that will be negotiated separately, the post includes in particular, as the Head of Studies, responsibility for the administration of studies at the department and its staff.

The study administration includes coordination and development of teaching, general issues concerning degree requirements (syllabus) and studies, as well as the department’s LUMA activities (national outreach in science and technology education). In addition to the Head of Studies, the study administration team at the department includes a planner, a secretary and the student counsellors.

An applicable PhD degree and good teaching skills are required for the position as University Lecturer. Applicants are best suited for the position if they are familiar with the teaching and study administration of computer science, as well as the discipline itself. In addition to formal competence, we appreciate good cooperative and organisational skills, active force and innovative visions of pedagogical development of teaching in computer science.

The salary is based on levels 5-7 of the demands chart for teaching and research staff under the university salary system. In addition, an individual supplement based on personal performance will be added to the salary.

A fair knowledge of Finnish and understanding of Swedish are required for posts in teaching and research at the University of Helsinki (Qualifications 309/1993). Foreigners and non-native-born Finnish citizens may be appointed for posts in teaching or research even if they have not shown sufficient knowledge of Finnish and Swedish.
