University of Helsinki receives funding for strengthening its research profile

The University of Helsinki will receive nine million euros of funding from the Academy of Finland for the purpose of strengthening its research profile.

“Having just learned of the cuts in the new Government Programme, we are happy to have been granted this funding for the University’s profiling and strategy work, despite knowing that it will be deducted from the universities’ overall funding,” says Vice-rector Keijo Hämäläinen.

The University sought funding for the Life Science Center, for which preparations are currently underway, as well as for strengthening the profiles of physics and natural sciences and centralising statistics teaching and education.

The University’s management group will discuss how to allocate the funding this week.

This was the first time the Academy offered funding of this type. The University has already begun preparations for the next call for profile funding, planned for autumn 2015. For the next round, attention must be focused on concrete measures to boost the University’s profile, which may mean new initiatives but also the rejection of earlier choices.
