Big Data presented at TAF 2015 happening

The annual TAF (Technology Academy of Finland) happening, spreading into several cities, has big data as a shared topic in its public events in October-November. What’s it all about?

Big data entails enormous amounts of information. It means that there is a lot of data, it is increasing exponentially, and it takes many forms, i.e. there are different kinds of data: text, measurements, images, videos. This material may be man-made or -communicated, like Instagram images, or machine-made, like the measurement data created by the monitoring of industrial processes.

- Big data has emerged as a topic of interest for some good reasons, says Docent Patrik Floréen of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki. He is one of the organisers of the programme for this year’s TAF happening, Tiedon valossa ("in the light of knowledge") in the metropolitan area along with Professor Ville Pulkki of Aalto University.
