Abstract
Most businesses heavily depend on software and the ability to manage
large and complex IT projects in a predictable way. This is relevant for
both the creation of innovative business cases, products, and services
(such as cloud computing, ambient systems), and the optimization of
existing ones (such as mobile services). The management of complex IT
projects and innovations is especially challenged by the non-determinism
of the process-product relationship in the “design“ domain software
development, the context-dependence of many IT-based technologies, and
the missing alignment between IT and higher-level business goals. One
means for improving the predictability of complex IT projects and for
understanding the effects of innovations is the development of so-called
hybrid models for estimation, benchmarking, and risk assessment. These
models combine expert knowledge with available data in a transparent
manner, providing reliable estimates and justifiable effort for
developing and applying the models. The development of such models
helps, for instance, to estimate defect content and quality assurance
effectiveness in a specific domain. This talk introduces basic
techniques for establishing management capabilities for planning or
adjusting software quality assurance strategies in companies and for
assessing software quality risks. Hybrid modeling techniques and
concrete industry case studies will be used to illustrate the
development, evaluation, and industry transfer of experience-based
prediction models.
Bio
Jürgen Münch is Division Manager at the Fraunhofer Institute for
Experimental Software Engineering (IESE) in Kaiserslautern, Germany, and
Vice Chairman of the German association for software metrics and cost
estimation (DASMA). Before that, Dr. Münch was an executive board member
of the temporary research institute SFB 501, which focused on software
product lines. He received his PhD degree (Dr. rer. nat.) in Computer
Science from the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany. Dr. Münch’s
research interests in software and systems engineering include:
modelling, measurement, and evolution of software processes and
resulting products, quantitative software quality assurance and control,
technology evaluation through experimental means and simulation,
model-based IT management, and global software development. Dr. Münch
has more than 15 years of experience in software engineering and the IT
project management field. He has headed various large research and
industrial system engineering projects, including the definition of
international quality and process standards. He has been teaching and
training in both university and industry environments for more than
eight years. He has been program co-chair of several renowned software
engineering conferences such as the International Conference on Software
Process (ICSP), the ACM/IEEE Symposium on Empirical Software Engineering
and Measurement (ESEM), or the conference on Product-Focused Software
Process Improvement (PROFES). Dr. Münch is a co-recipient of the IFIP
TC2 Manfred Paul Award for Excellence in Software Theory and Practice.
