On Monday, 28 Jan, the department launched a new tradition of staff morning coffee. Dozens of staff members joined in the event to start their week together over a cup of coffee. An interesting discussion was initiated by the invited guest of the morning, Jaakko Haapasalo. Jaakko is Head of Studio at Rovio Entertainment Ltd, the game company known world-wide for the Angry Birds brand. In discussions with him, we learned a good deal about games as well as about brand building. Since Jaakko is a former student of ours, we also had a great chance to discuss the role and contents of computer science education from the viewpoints of the growing Finnish game industry. It came as no surprise to us that our academic curriculum can offer a wide range of skills useful in game development.
