This year, the 11th ACM Conference on Embedded Networked Sensor Systems (SenSys 2013), the premier venue for emerging trends on mobile and networked sensing systems, features two full papers from the NODES group of the Department of Computer Science: "Accelerometer-Based Transportation Mode Detection on Smartphones" (Samuli Hemminki, Petteri Nurmi, Sasu Tarkoma) and "Carat: Collaborative Energy Diagnosis for Mobile Devices" (Adam J. Oliner, Anand P. Iyer, Ion Stoica, Eemil Lagerspetz, Sasu Tarkoma). The former, discusses how information about vehicular movement patterns can be extracted from embedded accelerometers of contemporary smartphones and how this information can be used to recognize the current transportation mode of the user. The latter, a collaborative effort with UC Berkeley, introduces Carat, a collaborative approach to energy anomaly detection and energy bug diagnosis on mobile devices. It uses the battery consumption of a community of over 600 000 devices to infer what is normal and alerts users of the Carat application about other applications with anomalous energy use.
