Researchers at the Department of Computer Science received the best paper award at the Evaluation and Assessment in Software Engineering (EASE 2014) conference for their paper titled “How do Software Developers Experience Team Performance in Lean and Agile Environments?” on May 14th 2014 in London. The article considers software team performance, especially the experience of performance in a rapidly changing, agile environment. The study shows why team performance should be considered as a larger issue than only meeting predefined objectives. High-performing software teams not only strive to reach defined goals, but actively influence goal setting and interpretation, and the redefinition of goals when the situation changes. Enhancing performance experiences requires integration of soft factors, such as communication, team spirit, and team identity, into the overall software development process. The results are based on interviews conducted in Finnish software companies as part of a Tekes-funded research project on software team performance.
The authors of the article are Fabian Fagerholm, Marko Ikonen, Petri Kettunen, and Jürgen Münch from the Department of Computer Science, University of Helsinki, Virpi Roto from the School of Arts, Design and Architecture, Aalto University, and Pekka Abrahamsson from the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. All authors worked at the Department of Computer Science, University of Helsinki, in the beginning of the research project.
