The vacancies are situated at the Department of Computer Science https://www.cs.helsinki.fi/en, which is part of the Faculty of Science. The Department of Computer Science is the leading Computer Science research and teaching unit in Finland. Three national Finnish Academy centres of excellence are active at the department, and the department has a close research partnership with Helsinki Institute for Information Technology (HIIT). The department disposes of an excellent research infrastructure, including its own high-performance cluster.
Data Science is an emerging field of scientific investigation focusing on methodologies, techniques, and algorithms for processing and analysing datasets of various forms. The Department of Computer Science has leading expertise in many areas of Data Science such as data mining, machine learning, middleware, and applications.
The Faculty of Science is announcing two open tenure-track
ASSISTANT PROFESSORSHIPS
in computer science pertaining to
(1) Data Science with emphasis on algorithms for analysing large datasets and distributed data processing (middleware).
(2) Life Science Informatics with emphasis on new algorithmic methods and platforms.
The positions are administratively located at the Department of Computer Science. The assistant professorships can also be filled as

For a person to be eligible for a tenure-track position, he or she must have completed a doctoral degree in the past ten years and has since acquired promising academic and other merits. In addition to research and teaching experience, work abroad and other international experience will be considered an asset. Any evidence of acquiring external research funding will also be significant.
A person who is appointed to a tenure-track position is employed as an assistant professor for three to five years, during which his or her performance will be monitored and evaluated according to the criteria defined when concluding the employment contract. Successful rating in the assessment leads to a new fixed-term employment contract as associate professor, the overall aim being a permanent position as professor.
The appointee to a professorship is employed on an open-ended basis.
According to the Government Decree on Universities, professors and assistant professors must be proficient in Finnish. They must also have at least satisfactory spoken and written skills in Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application.
The salary of an assistant professor will be based on level 7, and that of a professor on levels 8−10, of the requirement level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.
