Title: Constructing Genome-wide Linkage Maps for Moths and Butterflies

Abstract:

In this talk I will describe some key concepts of LEPIDOPTERA-MAP, a novel tool for constructing an accurate and comprehensive genetic linkage maps for butterflies and moths (lepidopterans) with next-generation sequencing (NGS) data from natural population samples and their offspring. This tool is mainly developed to study data from the Glanville fritillary butterfly, but has been applied also to data on other non-model species.

Moths and butterflies have achiasmatic meiosis, which means that only males exhibit genetic recombination. This is a key feature that should be utilized in the analysis of their genetic data. Preliminary results on the current version of LEPIDOPTERA-MAP, indicate that it is possible to construct a more dense and more accurate linkage map using this specialized method than using tools like JOINMAP, MAPMAKER and CRI-MAP that were used in previous analysis.

The linkage maps constructed have been used to validate and refine the Glanville fritillary de-novo genome assembly.
