Jos ohjelmaa ei ole valmiiksi installoitu koneelle, ensin ilmestyy ikkuna, joka kysyy installoidaanko. Silloin painetaan Install-painiketta.

Saadaan perustyökalut sisältävä ikkuna; työkaluista kertoo http://www.gimp.org/core_intro.html.

Mutta http://www.rru.com/~meo/gimp/Tutorial/basics.html on itse asiassa paremmin perusasiat, mm. layerit ja RGB- ja indeksoidut värit (esim. giffejä varten) selittävä sivu. Useimmiten toiminnot saa esiin painamalla hiiren oikeanpuoleista nappulaa työstettävän kuvan päällä.

Tavalliseen tapaan File/Open tai File/New tuo kuvan tai tyhjän "kankaan" esiin; täällä hiiren oikealla nappulalla saa esiin riittävästi valikoita. Valitse kuvan koko ja tyyppi (RGB=värikuva, grayscale=harmaasävykuva) ja taustan tyyppi. Paina OK ja "kangas" ilmestyy.

63. How do I fill with transparent?

If your image doesn't have an alpha channel, add one with Layers->Add Alpha Channel. Select the area you want to clear (if not the whole image). To change everything of a particular color transparent, pick Select->By Color... and click on the color in the image you want to replace. Then select Edit->Clear. That's it.

[Any dithering, blurring, or related effects against the color you replace will be against the original color. This usually requires you to do some form of cleanup of the edge pixels. In cases likely to result in this, change the color to transparent as early as reasonably possible to preclude extra "cleanup" work.]

Changing Image Types

There are several times you might want to change an image type.

• To perform an operation requiring a particular image type.
• To merge images of disparate types.
• To save an image to a file type requiring a particular image type.

In any case, the sequence of events is the same. Position the mouse over the window of the image whose type you wish to change, press the mouse's MENU button, select the Image sub-menu, and then select one of the image types (the 3 menu items in the middle: RGB, Grayscale and Indexed). The current image type will be grayed out.

Selecting RGB or Grayscale quietly converts the image to that type. Selecting Indexed results in a dialog. If you select the "Generate Optimal Palette" option (the default), you can define the maximum number of colors to allow in the indexed image's colormap. You might want to play around with the dithering; most of the time you will want to leave this selected.

Toiseen suuntaan, giffistä jpeggiin, jos kuvassa on "alpha channel" (transparentissa), niin siitä on syytä hankkiutua eroon: Layers->Flatten image.
