starfire update for 2.4.4-pre5

Hi Jeff,

Here is the same starfire.c version I sent earlier, this time diff'ed
against 2.4.4-pre5. It's essentially the version from 2.2.19 plus your
2.4.4-pre5 changes minus the 2.2 compatibility stuff.
