problems with rtl8139too under 2.4.9

I've got a problem with the rtl8139c onboard lan on an Elitegroup K7AMA with
the ALI Magik chipset. ifconfig shows the hardware ethernet address
ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff but under w2k everything works fine. The box runs mainly under
linux so LAN is very important.
Any suggestions?
