Possible problems with D-LINK DFE-550TX (stock sundance driver) under 2.4.18

Good morning peoples,
Appologies if this has been answered before - a quick search of
lkml and google did not show anything.

With the following hardware::
dual Athlon XP 1700+
Asus A7M266-D mother board
1.5GiB Crucial ECC DDR PC2100 (3 x 512MiB)
D-Link DFE-550TX NIC
SiS cheapo g/card
Quantum 40GB 7200 rpm HDD

We have been getting a large amount of the following in the kernel log,
repeating every 9 seconds or so::

Eventually the box either fell over or lost network connectivity,
however as it is co-located i can not be more specific.

The system is connected to a 3Com SuperStack II 3300 with the latest
firmware update, with the port forced to 100base-Tx-FD and
autonegotiation dissabled at the switch.

we are running a stock 2.4.18 kernel (.config enclosed) and i have not
tried Donald's drivers from scyld. However his diagnostic tool reports
the following (after the system was rebooted):
