Is there any reason why you cannot link busses, chips from within
i2c/Makefile?

It will work like this, but it surely is cleaner to do it from inside i2c
- CONFIG_MAINBOARD and CONFIG_SENSORS can not be set without CONFIG_I2C
AFAICS.
