2.5.68{,-bk1,-bk2} refuses to boot

topic says it all
blank screen after grub loads the kernel

manually added keith owens' videochar patch to init/main.c, and still get 
no output

i have _no_ idea how to diagnose further
#kernelnewbies isn't responding

2.5.67 works fine

any extra info on request, of course
