total lockup in .32 when doing tar over network

When doing large tar over network, it shows :

Kernel panic: skput:over: [address]
In swapper task - not syncing

And then linux is completely locked-up.

Kernel is 2.0.32 
ethernetcard is 3Com 3c900 Boomerang PCI (In 10Mb/Sec Ethernet)
32Meg's of memory (He said that it could not be that, because there is 
much free memory)
----
But the ide disks are pretty slow, so my friend thought that maybe disks 
cannot keep up with Boomerang and buffer overruns ??
