Now with 2.0.32 plus 3c59x:v0.47. Similar thing happens: machine hangs
*solid* at some random time. The clock stops. The ethernet interface
goes down. It can be woken up by pressing a key on the keyboard. This
makes me think there's an APM problem but (i) it's disabled in the
BIOS and (ii) the time at which the hangs occur is not consistent
w.r.t. time-since-the-machine-was-used-by-a-human (though it might be
I suppose w.r.t. time-since-the-machine-handled-a-network-request).
Anyway, at this point the clock, system and user processes start
running again, as if nothing had happened, except for the network
interface, which is shown to be up with ifconfig, but is certainly not
talking in or out. I don't know how fast the ethernet card ought to
generate interrupts but under a gentle ping (5 packets, 1 second
intervals) one interrupt was generated.

The only logged thing is the following, some time (less than one
minute but not immediately) after waking the machine with the
keyboard:
> Nov 28 21:26:33 *** kernel: Swansea University Computer Society IPX
0.34 for NET 3.035
> Nov 28 21:26:33 *** kernel: IPX Portions Copyright (c) 1995 Caldera, Inc.
> Nov 28 21:26:33 *** kernel: Appletalk 0.17 for Linux NET3.035

If I'm being dumb please tell me and I'll get off this list and fling
the 3Com card in the bucket, or build a robot to press the shift key
once every few minutes.

Cheers,

John. _ _
