2.1.70 knfsd (not) exporting to Solaris host

My 2.1.70 system running knfsd doesn't seem to want to export files to
solaris hosts.  I get messages like:

Dec  4 16:22:18 pigpen mountd[2112]: authenticated mount request from steam.atd.ucar.edu 

But the solaris machine (steam) tells me "NFS service not responding" and
the mount never happens.

Other linux boxes can happily mount the same partitions from the same
server.

I have another system at 2.1.65 that doesn't seem to have this problem.

Ideas?  Anything else I can do to track this one down?
