The point isn't that the application wants to eat too much VM.
The point is that the whole system COLLAPSES when the application
does so.
Random applications must never be permitted to kill the system, yet
that is what's happening. Killing the application in the face of
excessive resource demands, or making it misbehave in some suitable
manner, is fine, as long as the system continues to function. In this
case, the system fails to continue, and that is why I asked.
