CD-ROM problem in 2.1.71

I am experiencing a fairly minor problem with the 2.1.71 IDE CD-ROM
driver. If Quake or anything else tries to read from my CD-ROM drive
(Mitsumi FX-600), I get large numbers of messages like these:

Dec  5 17:26:11 medusa kernel: hdc: tratray open or drive not ready
Dec  5 17:26:11 medusa kernel: hdc: tray open or drive not ready

until I put a CD-ROM into the drive. Unlike in 2.0.32, it doesn't just
display that a few times and fail, it just goes on until I put in a CD. I
am using an Intel Zappa motherboard (Intel 430FX chipset, PIIX3 IDE
controller, using DMA-enhanced IDE driver). The drive is on the secondary
interface as master. If there's anything else that you need to know about
my setup to nail the problem down, please e-mail me. I am not on the Linux
Kernel mailing list right now, so please CC: me with any information. I
don't know if you are aware of this problem yet or not, but I decided that
incase you were not, I should let you know so it can be fixed. If this is
