2.1.71 and sound driver: what's going on ?

I'm trying to understand what was done to the sound driver in the last
major revamping. I can not understand why a lot of working things, now are
not working any more. Okay, modularization is a good objective, but ...

Now the problems.

I am not able any more to:

1) Configure the sound driver (fixed downloading the entire 2.1.71,
   getting the correct Config.in and copying it to Config.std ... what a
   waste of bandwidth and time !!!)
2) Add the lowlevel aedsp16 module (The preinit routines are #ifdef FIXME
   out. Why ? Who is the coder of this revamping ? Why he have not
   explained what work he made to the driver and what work he intend to do
   on the driver in the future ? Why was not released a pre-patch of this
   code on the kernel mlist, before adding it to the mainstream kernel
   sources ? What is the status of sound driver ?)

I'm sorry ... this is not intended to be a flame, but I am really not able
to understand what's going on with the sound driver.

Someone is able to explain ?
