I really think that in this case we ought to hold back for long enough to get
PnP into 2.2
Many of the problems I've run into when installing Linux for people have been
because of PnP devices which aren't supported satisfactorily. Sometimes, I've
had to give up completely, because Linux hasn't worked. Yes - I could have got
it to work with a little time, but if they're dubious about it in the first
place, then their nerve has gone and it's back to Windoze.
If we don't get PnP into 2.2, then it's going to be at least a year before
it's available for users who need stable kernels and distributions, and maybe
longer before the distributions' install routines use it all properly and give
the impression to the new user that they (IMO) should.
Is that really a satisfactory situation? People need PnP support now, for
production machines. The competition had it a long time ago, and I think it's
worth delaying the release of 2.2 for a little bit to make sure it's stable if
necessary, rather than leaving it out.
Just my opinion, but it's fairly widespread here in College, and hopefully
there's a few more people out there who think the same, too :)
