> The 2.1.x series kernel thinks that my IDE drive is an ATA DISK:
But it /is/ an ATA disk... IM(NOM)HO 2.1 reports the Right Thing.
ATA = AT Attachement. This is the official term for the
protocol used to communicate between the IDE interface
(it usually can't be considered a controller, with the
notable exception of the 'modern' DMA ones) and the
drive.
Other IDE devices, such as tape streamers, CDs, removables,
network interfaces (anyone?) and coffee machines use another
protocol: ATAPI (ATA Packet Interface).
The 2.1 kernel correctly reports that it found an ATA-speaking
device attached to the IDE bus. Nothing wrong with that ;)
hope this helps,
Rik -- now completely used to dvorak kbd layout...
