smc-ultra is not working on 2.2.13

Well, there is a bit of background on this. The last time I used this card
was on a 2.0.3x system. It worked right up until I put it into storage.
Now that I am reinstalling with a 2.2.13 kernel. I am getting some odd
problems.

The module loads fine (smc-ultra), and ifconfig sets up the interface
perfectly. When I try to use it, nothing appears to happen on the traffic
end, and I get messages like this in syslog:

Jan 1 12:17:31 herring kernel: eth0: Tx timed out, lost interrupt? TSR=0x3, ISR=0x3, t=899

Note that I've been fighting with this since before the new year, so I
have no concerns with this having anything to do with a y2k rollover. I
don't have a network connection of any kind on this system, so 2.2.13 is
all I can try for right now.

I checked on the source for this message, and it comes from the 8390.c
driver to be exact (I have no idea where the error starts though).

Thanks for any help.
