2.3.41-3 no login

2.3.40 works fine (Mobile Pentium MXX), libc2.1.2, gcc-2.9.5-2,
binutils-2.9.5.0.24
41-3 boots fine, but after I login it hangs on Password. If I do a
Ctrl-C, it says welcome to linux 2.3.41 as usual and the goes back to
login.
Hard reset to boot back to 2.3.40 and fsck found no problems.
