That makes *no* sense.
take x=2, y=2, z=17, n=5
by your definition,
the 2.2.17-pre5 patch is a patch against 2.2.17

You're telling me that there are "pre" releases of kernels that are 
only available in patch form, where the patch is against the 
finished product?
