I reinstalled 2.2.15pre17, the previous version of Linux that
it had been running. gphoto and camera download work correctly.

The thought on the list seems to be that nanosleep/select are
doing something odd in 2.2.16.

nanosleep is getting called (I presume via select) with a
large timeout. However, gphoto is running as non-root, so
it shouldn't be in the realtime mode scheduling behavior.

Similar failures and X pointer molasses occur with the command line
application photopc. photopc also fails to work if X isn't running. So
I'm willing to say its not an interaction problem with XFree86.

The idea of the serial driver and /dev/psaux interfering
with each other and X have been eliminated as possible problems.
