I did three things, all of them at once, and one of them has done the
trick (don't know which - but it works for me now):
a) set DMA channel to 1
b) set IRQ to 7 instead of auto
c) put modprobe lp right into /etc/rc.d/boot.local
Things that could be wrong:
a) autoprobing IRQ while the PS/2 mouseport is open
b) autoprobing IRQ whatever happens elsewhere
c) DMA channel 3 support
d) probing IO while PS/2 mouseport is open
