FWIW, i see really bad performance in 2.2.17pre8 when i'm using almost
all the real memory (128MB, with 128MB swap, but also seen with
additional 256MB swap). i'm not sure how to diagnose the problem
better than 'it spends a lot of time churning the disk'...
