I have another possible complementary approach: I received a very kind
email yesterday from Max de Mendizábal <mmendiz@acer.com.mx> who is
assembling the official Acer Linux website at
http://www.acer.com.mx/linux -- Max tells me Acer is committed to
Linux and they want to do what they can to promote Linux on Acer
laptops.
In their initial release of the Lucent drivers, Lucent states that
other versions would become available if their distributors expressed
an interest; in my reply to Max, I explained the advantages of 2.4 for
laptops and the problems with the current modem driver. I requested he
prod Acer on our behalf to have them speak with Lucent through
official channels, and perhaps the time is ripe for other people to
also contact Max to gently explain how releasing the specs for this
driver would help solve all our problems.
