Two days out of three this week, arriving at work I've logged in and
typed `startx'. The display goes black and stays black. Can't change
consoles, can't SysRq anything, can't login over the network, but can
ping. First time was with 2.2.17pre1, afterwhich I switched to
2.2.17pre9 which had the same problem this morning. Nothing unusual
in the logs. I haven't had a system crash prior to this for over a
year. After the reboot, both times startx worked fine.

The box is a dual Pentium-III 500 ASUS P2B-DS motherboard with 128meg
of RAM. It's got the onboard SCSI and a second BusLogic 948 SCSI
card, and an SMC EtherPower network card. I am going to try setting
up the serial console to see if I can see what is happening.
