One of my problem child SMP machines crashed Monday night and I noticed
something that was very strange.

Based on looking at the log files for connections, and the login history it
appears that at a magic time (23:38:16), the server stopped incrementing the
system clock. Connections that were occurring at 15 minute intervals
suddenly started happening all at the same time (as logged). Additionally,
an invalid string that a SA typed in was logged as occurring at 23:38:16
even though I know the user typed the string in at 7:30 AM.

Is there some thing that would cause the clock to stop ticking on SMP
systems?
