ALi15x3 UDMA Kernel Support

I'm trying to achieve UDMA support for my ASUS P5A motherboard in linux.
ASUS's website points to http://bean.cs.ccu.edu.tw/~trouble/LinuxIDE for
linux IDE drivers. The INSTALL file in the download seems to indicate that
ALi15x3 support is included in linux-2.3.x kernels (and therefore, I
suppose intended for release in linux-2.4.x kernels), however, the INSTALL
file instructs the reader to replace the original alim15x3.c driver with
the one being provided there, and to rewrite a bit of code in the ide-pci.c
file.

Could you describe the differences between the two alim15x3.c drivers and
the coding changes? I'm not a C programmer, and I don't understand
hardware driver development details.

Thanks.
