The LI only comes when it can find the boot sector in the MBR but not the
rest part, i.e. the initrd, kernel etc. Have you installed lilo in the
1st partition of boot HD & not in the MBR?

Some (or all??) Compaq m/cs has a part of their setup stored in a special
partition of the hard disk. Have you taken it into account while
installing lilo?

For my Compaq deskpro m/c with adaptac SCSI HD's, what I did is to install
the compaq setup in the partition that it took automatically (1st
partition of first HD), then installed MS DOS system files in that (sys
c:) so that that partition itself becomes bootable. Then I installed LILO
& added a label for that partition. It works fine now.
