It's my overall impression that because of the pervasive multithreading and
low latency in the BeOS that the UI response is much better than in Linux.
Both Linux and BeOS are vastly better than Windows (either 98 or NT) for UI
responsiveness.
I originally used the BeOS on a 150 MHz Mac PowerPC 8500, and it was quite
impressive how much more responsive the UI was there than on the MacOS.
In general, a BeOS makes a machine that is underpowered in the more widely
used OSes into something that is positively snappy.
Interestingly, the BeOS has been steadily degrading in this regard, or at
least was until recently. I haven't tried BeOS 5 yet (still waiting for my
CD) but the responsive of BeOS DR8 was much better than later releases; the
BeOS used to run great with 8 MB but now requires 32.
