2.4.0-test2[-ac2] PANIC: No init found. (Alpha DP264-UP no SMP)

2.4.0-test1-ac4 has been running here for a month, but 2.4.0-test2
(with and without -ac2) fails to boot with

Warning: unable to open an initial console.
panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel.

The boot command (SRM) is
boot <bootdev> -file boot/vmlinux.gz -flags root=/dev/sda1 bootdevice=sr0
and I noticed that it seemed not to like sr0 -- it scrolled by too quickly
for me to see clearly, but it seems to have guessed src? or something.
Anyway it works for all previous kernel versions 2.2 and 2.4-test1.

Original install was RH6.0, plus I've upgraded lots of stuff..
