make oldconfig bug

Since a long time I'm observing this problem in out configuration scripts.
It only happens rarely but I think I've even observed it when configuring
kernels for crosscompilation on other operating systems such as IRIX:

# make oldconfig
[...]
*
* Loadable module support
*
Enable loadable module support (CONFIG_MODULES) [Y/n/?]
scripts/Configure: Can't reopen pipe to command substitution (fd 4): No child processes
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
