The topic of Professor Münch’s lecture will be: Using Measurement as Enabler for Software-based Innovations: State of the Art and New Challenges for Software Measurement.
Abstract:
The development of software-based innovations is especially challenged by emergent requirements, rapid change of technology, and the need for combining assurance with agility. In addition, it is increasingly important to align software development and business strategies. The emergence of cloud computing, for instance, implies that development decisions require not merely pure technical considerations, but also business-related considerations. Companies that want to make use of the benefits of such new disruptive technologies and create software-based innovations need to get an understanding of the benefits of available technologies for their specific development environment and must be able to identify and assess development risks. Without such knowledge, companies typically have to accept significant risks. One means for understanding the benefits and risks of software-based innovations is the use of software measurement practices and empirical software engineering. This talk presents the state of the art for advanced software measurement and presents new challenges. Concrete research results and industry case studies will be used to illustrate the application of advanced measurement practices for research, technology transfer, and education.
Short Biography:
Jürgen Münch is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki and the first Finland Distinguished Professor (FiDiPro) of the Department. Prior to his current position, Jürgen Münch has been the Department Head and since 2007 the Division Manager for Quality and Process Engineering at the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering. Before that, Dr. Münch was an executive board member of the temporary research institute SFB 501 "Development of Large Systems with Generic Methods" funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). His research in software and systems engineering centers on measurement and quantitative analysis of software processes and systems, cloud-based software engineering, software process modeling and management, global software development, and empirical software engineering. He is co-inventor of GQM+Strategies, a method for aligning company's software strategies with long-term business goals. Professor Münch has been a principal investigator of numerous research and industrial development projects, including the definition of international quality and process standards. Besides FiDiPro, he has been awarded the IFIP TC2 Manfred Paul Award for Excellence in Software Theory and Practice, several best paper awards, and the technology innovation award from the Lotto foundation Rhineland-Palatinate. He is Vice Chairman of the German Association for Software Metrics and Cost Estimation (DASMA).
