Title: Molecular Communications: A new communication paradigm for nanoscale devices
Abstract
In recent years, nanotechnology has progressed tremendously resulting in sophisticated devices that are able to support various health care applications. Example of these applications include improved monitoring processes for critical patients, improved and targeted drug delivery, etc. While these developments have resulted in nano devices with improved capabilities, the one lacking functionality is the ability for these devices to communicate and network between each other. Molecular communications, is a new communication paradigm that allows nano scale devices to communicate and network between each other, by utilizing biological components to develop communication systems. This presentation will present an overview of current research conducted in molecular communications, where the presentation will briefly touch on calcium signaling, microtubles rail networks, bacteria nano networks, as well as protocols that have been proposed for molecular communications.
Biography
Dr. Sasitharan Balasubramaniam (Sasi) completed his Bachelors in Electrical Engineering and PhD in Computer Science from the University of Queensland, Australia, in 1998 and 2005, respectively, and Masters of Engineering Science from Queensland University of Technology, in 1999. He is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the Telecommunication Software and Systems Group (http://www.tssg.org/), Waterford Institute of Technology, and is also the Research Unit Manager for the Bio-inspired Networking Unit (http://www.tssg.org/research/units/bio-inspired-networking/). Sasi is a funded Science Foundation Ireland investigator, and his main research interests includes Bio-inspired Future Internet as well as Molecular and Nano scale communications.
