Title : Touch and gaze interaction revisited
Abstract: Touch input and two-handed interaction were intensively studied in the mid 80's but it's taken 20 years for these ideas to emerge in the mainstream, with the advent of multi-touch interfaces. Gaze has been studied for almost as long as interaction modality and appears on the brink of wider use. This talk will present recent work that reconsiders touch and gaze - from a keyboard overlaid with touch display, to use of touch and gaze for interaction across devices, and novel ways of using eye movement for interaction.
Hans Gellersen is a Professor of Interactive Systems in the School of Computing and Communications at Lancaster University. He has a long-standing track record in ubiquitous computing and systems for human-computer interaction. He has led research on ‘smart objects’, context sensing, location tracking, activity recognition, device association, and novel devices for user interaction. Current specific interests are the eye-computer interface, fabrication of 3D interactive objects, and body language as interface. Hans is closely involved with the International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing (Ubicomp), which he founded in 1999. He is also an Editorial Board Member of IEEE Pervasive Computing Magazine, and an Editor of the Journal on Personal and Ubiquitous Computing. Hans holds a PhD in computer science from the University of Karlsruhe.
Title: Beyond Multitouch: Interactive surfaces that support haptic feedback and multiple independent views
Abstract: Although Multi-touch devices have become common in the consumer world, users have sacrificed the tactile feedback afforded by physical buttons. The Bristol Interaction and Graphics group has been exploring various technical solutions to create the next generation of touch interfaces that support multi-point haptic feedback as well as dynamic shape manipulation through surface actuation. In this talk I will present UltraHaptics a multi-point haptic feedback system that allows users to experience haptic feedback simultaneously in multiple locations on an interactive surface. This feedback is created in mid-air – so users don’t have to touch or hold any device to experience it. Along side this research, my group has also been looking at creating shape-shifting devices that allow dynamic manipulation of the device to create interactive systems with better physical affordances. I will present our work on Morphees a shape-shifting handheld and Changibles a constructive assembly of shape-changing handhelds.
Sriram Subramanian is a Professor of Human-computer Interaction at the University of Bristol with a research interests in exploring new forms of interactive systems. He is specifically interested in rich and expressive input combining multi-touch, haptics and touchless gestures. Before joining the University of Bristol, he worked as a senior scientist at Philips Research Netherlands and as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Saskatchewan, Canada.
