8There is actually something in between those two kinds (evolutionary and developmental) of biological learning, which is learning in the womb. At the late stages of the pregnancy, the visual system of the foetus is “learning”. While its eyes are closed, and they don’t receive much input, certain dynamic patterns called “travelling waves” are generated in the eye, on the retina. These patterns are then fed to the visual cortex of the brain, enabling some basic learning of visual regularities, complementing the information in the genes (Wong, 1999).
